Debbie has spent most of her 30-year career in human resources for healthcare where she has implemented strategies to attract, develop, and retain a qualified workforce. But, she has also focused on creating a work environment that supports and nurtures employees.

In October 2011, Debbie was named Human Resource Strategist of the Year for her VCUHS H.O.P.E. initiative, a five-year strategic plan that makes lasting and meaningful changes in employees’ lives. The person nominating Deborah wrote, “She’s helped dreams come true. Employees have finally been able to buy their first homes, send dependents to college, build families through adoption support, and much more.”

Debbie is lifetime SPHR certified and has been a member of Richmond SHRM for more than 20 years. She serves on the VCUHS Project SEARCH advisory board. Debbie’s other passions include buying antiques, vintage furniture, and collectables circa 1940-1950; her two Standard Poodles, Beau and Josie; and the newest addition to the Slayden family, her beloved granddaughter, Katie Grace.
